Barcelona Agency of Urban Ecology
Barcelona Agency of Urban
Ecology is a public consortium of the Barcelona City Council, the
Metropolitan Entity of Water Services and Residue Treatments (EMSHTR)
and the Barcelona County Council. BCN Ecologia’s purposes are:
- The formulation of instruments to aid the rethinking of the cities and their environments with a view to sustainability and the application of Urban Ecology as a discipline of analysis and urban planning.
- Developing integrated instruments, models and urban indicators for more sustainable cities.
- Diagnosis and urban planning, research, training, promotion and dissemination of the functions of urban systems in the process leading toward sustainability.
- Promoting the convergence of university initiatives, private enterprise and the administration for the development of the urban settlements along the lines of sustainability and the improvement of the quality of life.
- Promoting strategies of urban development based more on information and knowledge and less on the consumption of resources; to promote the model of the compact and diverse Mediterranean city, as opposed to the dispersed city.
The Agency develops powerful instruments for the analysis of the city ecosystem, including geographic systems, databases, models, and indicators. The Agency provides systems to support management and urban planning, and will work on the project in close conjunction with the City of Barcelona. It has allocated 47 p-ms of effort, primarily to the RTD on access modes, information spaces, decision support systems and evaluation.
