Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo, S.A.U. (Telefónica I+D or TID) is Spain’s leading company for research, development and innovation in telecommunications. The Telefónica Group created Telefónica I+D in 1988 and fully owns the company, with the objective of boosting the competitiveness of the Group’s subsidiaries by means of the technological innovation. The activities of Telefónica I+D are integrated in the Telefónica Group strategy, and are directed towards service creation; network, service, application and business management. The Telefónica I+D mission is to create new value for the Telefónica Group, its customers, and ultimately for society. Telefónica I+D presently has offices in Madrid, Valladolid, Barcelona, Huesca (Spain), Sao Paolo (Brazil) and Mexico City, and continues its geographical diversification in Spain and internationally.

The role of Telefónica I+D in ICING is as a creator, provider and integrator of telecommunications services and telematics applications. Telefónica I+D will bring to the project core competences in the following areas:

  1. Mobile network services: short messaging (SMS), multimedia messaging (MMS), cell broadcast (CBS), browsing (WAP, I-Mode, WWW) and voice.
  2. 3G networks, Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and SIP based applications.
  3. External network interfaces, in particular OSA-Parlay, Web Services and Parlay X.

Telefónica I+D will spend the bulk of its effort in the technological infrastructure (WP7) and in providing the test bed (WP8), and will work closely together with T-Systems in these activities. The operator in the consortium, Telefónica I+D will:

  1. providing access to mobile network services in Barcelona and support delivery of such services through existing network infrastructure in Dublin, respectively.
  2. work on functional requirements, service scenarios and access modes to be used in the three cities.
  3. develop a service gateway between the mobile network interfaces and those of the diverse local government agencies, using Web Services.
  4. develop multimedia applications running on the IMS.

The objective is to develop applications, practices and standards that can be offered in any country by any operator to its Cities.

Telefónica I+D cooperate in joint research projects with mebers of the GSM Association, the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), 3GPP and other standardisation bodies. TID will provide 55 p-ms of effort.
