City of Dublin
The City of Dublin (Baile Átha
Cliath in Irish) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of
Ireland, located near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the
mouth of the River Liffey in the County Dublin. Dublin has a population
of some 495,000 (CSO Census 2002) within the official city boundary,
though the population of the Greater Dublin area is in excess of
1,100,000.
Dublin City is governed by Dublin City Council, which employs approximately 6,200 people and provides an estimated 500 services for people living and working in the City. In 1996, the government published ‘Better Local Government: A Programme for Change’, which sets out a framework and strategy for significant reforms within local government to develop more effective involvement of local councillors and other stakeholders, and co-ordinate local development initiatives. As part of these reforms the Government set up Dublin City Development Board (DCDB). The DCDB is a partnership of key agencies influencing local development in the city, which works under and is supported by the Local Authority. The principle functions of the Board are to prepare and oversee the implementation of a new city strategy for economic, social and cultural development from 2002 to 2012, and to facilitate consultation with the public on this strategy.
The Strategy document, “Dublin a City of Possibilities” developed by the DCDB and agreed by the City Council as a whole, sets out the Economic, Social and Cultural Strategy that will guide sustainable development in Dublin City until 2012. The Strategy identifies four crosscutting or enabling themes. These enabling themes underpin all actions and objectives that seek to ensure sustainable development at neighbourhood level and at City level to create A Diverse and Inclusive City - A Connected and Informed City - An Integrated City - A Democratic and Participative City.
The City will employ researchers to a total of 32 p-ms to specify requirements, work on service and infrastructure integration, Testbeds, evaluation and dissemination of results.
